The philosophy of “Better Life” at Apple Health Care

Recognizing the critical need for a more human based approach to long-term care, Apple Health Care, Inc. has adopted the philosophy of “Better Life”. This philosophy is unique to Apple’s twenty-four homes. Better Life is built on the premise that a resident or “elder” staying with us is a unique and special individual.

It is our mission to provide not only excellent medical services, but also compassionate, quality care. The relationships formed by our residents enrich the time they spend in our homes.  We make it a priority to foster the development of those relationships.

By approaching long term-care from the viewpoint that each resident should be at the center of the decision making process, it was important to change our practices from the moment a resident steps through the door. We provide a home-like atmosphere that is similar to the way each resident lived throughout their life by taking the time to find out what their routine was at home.

Our residents are happier and more independent than ever. They sit on Resident Councils and participate in Community Meetings. Residents take part in cooking clubs, gardening groups and music workshops. They facilitate and participate in intergenerational programs by sponsoring little league teams and hosting carnivals. Most importantly, they help us to identify the strengths in ourselves, so we can work toward becoming the community leaders they have been all of their lives.

Apple has always made quality care its primary focus. The Better Life philosophy has enhanced our care, improving quality of life for our residents as well as our staff. We are on the path to ensuring that the beds we provide are beds that we, ourselves, would want to lie in.

At the Core of Apple

At Apple Health Care, our Core Values represent our philosophy about what we are here to do and how we intend to do it. All Apple employees are asked to uphold this constantly evolving code. Just as apples depend on the seeds within their core for continued existence, we rely on these values to focus our efforts and to provide a strong foundation on which to grow our future.

These are the core values at Apple Health Care:

  • Apple recognizes the primary importance of valuing the dignity of the individual.
  • We believe that as we want staff to treat residents, so must we treat each other.
  • Apple is committed to quality of life and nurturing the human spirit and the potential of each resident.
  • Apple empowers the residents, families, and staff to create the environment they call “home.”
  • Apple promotes a supportive community for all employees in Apple’s extended family of homes.
  • Apple believes in people’s continuous growth and development through a commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Apple is committed to operating quality homes by maintaining high performance standards.
  • Apple believes that our ongoing growth and evolution is founded upon our employees’ continued growth, through openness and self-assessment, seeking feedback from others and demonstrating a willingness to change.
  • Apple promotes a good neighbor policy for all its homes to become active members of their wider communities.
  • While Apple Health Care is bound together by shared values, the unique identity and culture of each home is nurtured and respected.
